Review student assignments

In this article: How to see student assignment submissions, provide feedback, and approve or reject their work. All Plans

When you add assignments to your lessons, students submit their work directly inside the course. The Review Assessments page collects all submissions in one place so you can review them, send feedback, and mark each one as approved or rejected.

This is where the teaching relationship gets personal. Students put effort into their submissions, and a thoughtful response from you can make a real difference in their learning.

Find your assignment submissions

  1. Open your course and go to Manage Course → Review Assessments.

  2. You'll see a list of all students who have submitted assignments. Each row shows:

    • Student name
    • The lesson where the assignment lives
    • Number of answers submitted
    • Submission date and time
    • Status: Pending, Approved, or Rejected

Review and respond to a submission

  1. Click on a student's row to open a detailed view of their assignment.

  2. Read through their responses. You'll see each question and the student's answer.

  3. Type your feedback in the feedback field. Be specific about what they did well and what they could improve.

  4. Choose whether to Approve or Reject the submission.

  5. Click Save & Send Feedback.

The student receives an email notification with their responses, your feedback, and the assignment status. The email also includes a View Assignment button so they can see everything inside the course.

Tip: Even a brief "Nice work on this — here's one thing to try next time" goes a long way. Students who get personal feedback are more likely to stay engaged and complete the rest of the course.

Assignment statuses

  • Pending — The student submitted but you haven't reviewed it yet.
  • Approved — You reviewed the submission and marked it as complete.
  • Rejected — You reviewed the submission and asked the student to try again. Include specific feedback so they know what to change.

A rejected assignment isn't a dead end. Students can resubmit, and you'll see the new submission in your Review Assessments list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to review every assignment?
It depends on how you've set up your course. Assignments show up in the Review Assessments list when students submit them. You can review as many or as few as makes sense for your course. If you're running a large course where individual review isn't practical, some creators use assignments as self-reflection exercises and skip the formal review.
Can a student resubmit after being rejected?
Yes. When you reject a submission with feedback, the student can revise their work and resubmit. The new submission appears in your Review Assessments list.
Where do I create assignments in the first place?
Assignments are added inside individual lessons when you're building your course content. You can add assignment questions (short answer, long answer, file upload) to any lesson. Students see them below the lesson content and submit their work there.
