Create a module

In this article: How to create modules in your course, plus how to rename, reorder, hide, copy, and delete them. All Plans

Before You Start

Modules are the top-level containers in your course. Think of them like chapters in a book or weeks in a program. They group related lessons together and give your students a clear roadmap of what they'll work through.

Modules don't hold content directly. Your content lives inside lessons, which sit inside modules. For example, a "Week 1: Getting Started" module might contain three lessons: an intro video, a reading, and a reflection exercise.

You can add modules at any time, even after students are enrolled. They'll see the new module the next time they visit the course.

Create a Module

  1. Open the Manage Course menu (Cmd+K on Mac, Ctrl+K on Windows) and click Modules & Lessons.
  2. Click the Create Module button at the top of the outline.

  1. Give your module a title and click Save.

Your new module appears in the course outline. Now you can start adding lessons inside it.

Tip: Name your modules from your student's perspective. "Week 1: Finding Your Style" is more motivating than "Module 1: Introduction." Students should know what they'll get out of each section before they start it.

Manage Your Modules

Here's a quick reference for everything you can do with modules:

Action How
Rename a module Click the module title in the outline, edit the name, and click Save
Reorder modules Drag and drop modules in the outline to change the order
Hide a module from students Click the module title, then toggle the module to Hidden
Copy a module to another course Click the module title → Copy module → select the destination course
Delete a module Click the module title → trash icon next to Delete Module
Note: Deleting a module removes it and all its lessons permanently. There's no undo, so double-check before you delete.

What Your Students See

Students see modules listed in the left sidebar of your course, in the order you set. Each module expands to show its lessons. As students complete lessons, checkmarks appear next to them, giving a clear sense of progress.

Hidden modules don't appear in the student view at all. Use this when you're still building content or want to hold a module back until a certain date.
