Create a lesson

In this article: How to add a lesson to your course, use the lesson editor to add content, and preview what your students will see. All Plans

Before You Start

Lessons are where your actual course content lives. Text, video, audio, downloadable files, discussion prompts, assignments -- everything goes inside lessons. Each lesson should focus on a single task or topic: watch this video, read this explanation, complete this exercise.

When students finish a lesson, they click Mark as Complete to move forward. This gives them a clear sense of progress through your course.

Lessons always live inside a module. If you haven't created a module yet, do that first. See Create a module.

Create a Lesson

  1. Open the Manage Course menu (Cmd+K on Mac, Ctrl+K on Windows) and click Modules & Lessons.
  2. Inside the module where you want the lesson, click Add Lesson.

  1. You'll land in the lesson editor. Enter a title at the top of the page.
  2. Add your content: type text directly, or use Add media to insert video, audio, images, or embedded content.

  1. Changes save automatically. Look for the checkmark and "saved" indicator in the upper right corner.
Tip: Keep each lesson focused on one thing. If you find yourself covering two separate topics, split it into two lessons. Short, focused lessons are easier for students to complete and give them more frequent progress checkmarks.

What You Can Add to a Lesson

The lesson editor supports several content types, and you can combine them in a single lesson:

  • Text -- Type directly in the editor with formatting tools for headings, bold, italic, links, lists, and images.
  • Video -- Upload from your computer or record directly in your browser. Ruzuku hosts and optimizes your video for web and mobile playback.
  • Audio -- Upload audio files or record in your browser.
  • Downloadable files -- PDFs, worksheets, slides, or any other file. See Add downloadable files to lessons.
  • Embedded content -- YouTube, Vimeo, or other external embeds. See Embed videos and external content.
  • Discussion prompts -- Invite students to respond with text, images, or video. See Add a discussion prompt to a lesson.
  • Assignments -- Quizzes, polls, and open-ended work for your review.

For a complete walkthrough of all content types, see Create your course content.

Preview Your Lesson

Click Student View in the upper right corner of the lesson editor to see exactly what your students will see. This shows the lesson content, discussion prompts, downloads, and the overall layout as it appears to enrolled participants.

To switch back to editing, click the editor toggle at the top of the page.
