Submit assignments and get feedback

In this article: How to find assignments in your course, submit your work, and understand what happens when your instructor reviews it.

All Plans

Some courses include assignments where you submit work for your instructor to review. Assignments are a way to practice what you are learning, get personalized feedback, and demonstrate your progress.

Not every course has assignments. If yours does, here is how they work.

Where to find assignments

Assignments appear inside individual lessons. When you open a lesson that contains an assignment, you will see it below the lesson content. It looks different from a regular discussion prompt — assignments have their own section with a clear label and input area.

Your instructor decides which lessons include assignments. If you are not sure which lessons have them, work through your course content in order and you will find them as you go.

How to submit an assignment

  1. Open the lesson that contains the assignment.
  2. Scroll down to the assignment section.
  3. Read the instructions your instructor has provided. These explain what to submit and any specific requirements.
  4. Type your response in the text area. You can write as much as you need.
  5. If you need to attach a file (a document, image, audio, or video), click the option to add a file and select it from your device. You can upload files up to 300 MB.
  6. Click Submit (or the equivalent button) to send your work to your instructor.

That is it. Your assignment is submitted and your instructor will be notified.

Tip: If your assignment is long or detailed, consider writing it in a separate document first, then pasting it into the text area. That way you have a backup copy.

What happens after you submit

Once you submit an assignment, your instructor receives a notification. They will review your work and can:

  • Approve your submission
  • Request changes and ask you to resubmit
  • Send feedback with comments on your work

You will receive an email when your instructor responds. The email includes your original submission, your instructor's feedback, and the status (approved or needs revision). You can also click through to view the feedback inside the course.

Checking your submission status

After submitting, your assignment will show one of these statuses:

  • Pending — your instructor has not reviewed it yet
  • Approved — your instructor has reviewed and approved your work
  • Needs revision — your instructor would like you to make changes and resubmit

You can see the current status on the lesson page where you submitted the assignment.

Resubmitting an assignment

If your instructor asks for changes, you can update your submission:

  1. Go back to the lesson with the assignment.
  2. Review the feedback your instructor provided.
  3. Make your changes and submit again.

Your instructor will be notified of the new submission and will review it.

Assignments vs. discussions

Assignments and discussions are two different things:

  • Assignments go directly to your instructor for private review. Other students cannot see your submission unless the instructor shares it.
  • Discussions are shared spaces where everyone in the course can see and respond to posts.

If you are asked to share something with the group, that is a discussion. If you are asked to submit work for individual review, that is an assignment.

Can I edit my assignment after submitting?
If your instructor requests changes, you can resubmit with updates. For any other situation, contact your instructor directly and let them know you would like to make a change to your submission.
How long until I get feedback?
This depends on your instructor. Some review within a day or two; others review on a weekly schedule. If your course has a specific timeline for feedback, your instructor will share that with you. You will get an email as soon as they respond.
What file types can I upload?
You can upload most common file types, including images (JPG, PNG), documents (PDF, Word), videos (MP4, MOV), and audio files (MP3). The maximum file size is 300 MB per file.
