Remove a student from a course
In this article: How to revoke a student's access to your course, what happens to their data and discussion posts when you do, and how to handle refunds separately. All Plans
Sometimes you need to remove someone from a course. Maybe they requested a refund and you want to revoke access. Maybe they were enrolled by mistake. Maybe you're cleaning up test accounts you created during setup.
Whatever the reason, it takes about 30 seconds. Here's the process and what to expect.
How to remove a student
- Open your course and go to Manage Course → Students.
- Find the student you want to remove. Use the search bar if you have a long list — type a few characters of their name or email.
- Click on the student's row to open their detail panel on the right side of the screen.
- Find the Access toggle and switch it off.
The student immediately loses the ability to view course content. They won't see lessons, modules, meetings, or discussions.
What happens when you remove a student
Here's what changes and what stays:
Course access — The student can no longer view lessons, modules, meetings, or course materials. They'll see a message indicating they no longer have access if they try to visit the course.
Discussion posts — Any posts the student made in lesson discussions or course-wide forums remain visible to other enrolled students. Removing a student does not delete their contributions.
Progress data — The student's lesson completion history and progress percentage are still available to you on the Students page. Nothing is lost.
Payment records — All payment history stays in your records and in your Stripe or PayPal account. Revoking access doesn't touch the financial side.
Enrollment record — The student still appears in your student list with their access toggled off. They're not erased — just locked out of the content.
Handle refunds separately
Refunds and course access are two separate actions in Ruzuku. This is intentional — it gives you control over each step.
For Stripe payments: You can issue refunds directly from the student's detail panel. Click on the student under Manage Course → Students, open their Payments tab, and use the refund option there. You can also process refunds in your Stripe dashboard at stripe.com.
For PayPal payments: Process refunds through your PayPal dashboard. Ruzuku doesn't have a direct refund button for PayPal transactions.
For subscription or payment plan students: Cancel the recurring billing first, then toggle access off. If you only revoke access without canceling the subscription, the student's card will continue to be charged.
To cancel from Ruzuku:
- Go to Manage Course → Students and click on the student.
- Open the Payments tab.
- Click Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Payment Plan).
- Confirm the cancellation. No further charges will be made.
You can also cancel subscriptions in your Stripe dashboard at dashboard.stripe.com under Subscriptions.

When you might remove a student
A few common scenarios:
- Refund request. The student asked for their money back. Process the refund, then toggle off access.
- Enrolled by mistake. You sent an invitation to the wrong email, or a test account signed up during setup. Remove access to keep your student list clean.
- Student asked to be removed. They're not requesting a refund — they just want out. Toggle off access and confirm with them.
- End of a time-limited program. If you ran a cohort with a defined end date and want to close access afterward, you can toggle off access for all participants. For this scenario, consider closing the course for signups instead — see Open and close a course for sign-ups.
Re-enroll a removed student
Changed your mind? The student resolved a billing issue? You removed the wrong person? You can restore access in a few clicks.
- Go to Manage Course → Students.
- Find the student in your list. They'll still appear even with access toggled off.
- Click on their row to open the detail panel.
- Switch the Access toggle back on.
The student regains access immediately. Their previous progress and discussion posts are still intact — nothing was deleted when you removed them.
