Enable files for download

In this article: How to turn on downloads for uploaded files so students can save videos, audio, PDFs, and other materials for offline access.

All Plans

When to enable downloads

By default, files you upload to a lesson (video, audio, PDFs, worksheets) are available to view or play inside the lesson, but students can't download them to their device. Enabling downloads is useful when you want students to:

  • Save a PDF worksheet or reference guide for offline use.
  • Download audio files for listening on a commute.
  • Keep a copy of video content for slower internet situations.

You control downloads on a per-file basis, so you can make some files downloadable and keep others view-only.

Enable downloads for a lesson

  1. Open your course and go to Manage Course (keyboard shortcut: Cmd+K on Mac, Ctrl+K on Windows).
  2. Click Modules & Lessons in the Content column.
  3. Open the lesson that contains the files you want to make downloadable.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the lesson editor.
  5. Click Downloads on the dark gray bar.
  6. Use the toggle next to each file to enable or disable downloads.
Tip: Click Student View to see how the download links appear to your students. Download links show below the lesson content.

What your students see

When downloads are enabled, students see download links below the lesson content. They can click a link to save the file directly to their device. Files that aren't toggled on won't show a download option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enable downloads for some files but not others in the same lesson?
Yes. Each file in the lesson has its own toggle. Turn on downloads for the files you want students to save, and leave the others off.
Can students download all files at once?
Students download files individually by clicking each download link. There isn't a "download all" button.
Does enabling downloads work for embedded content from YouTube or Vimeo?
No. The download toggle only applies to files you've uploaded directly to Ruzuku. Embedded videos from external services like YouTube or Vimeo are controlled by those platforms.
